Sacred – Sheryl’s Daily Post

In my mind, sacred has two meanings.  One relates to religion or spirituality while the second (and obviously more broadly) refers to something one cherishes as precious, that we show respect even reverence and dedication to such as honesty with a partner, or perhaps old growth redwood trees, human rights, the longing for truth justice and peace, or the light in a child’s eye.

I think each one of us – whether theist, agnostic, or atheist – needs to access our heart of hearts and find that which feels most precious and most worthy of protection.  A life with nothing sacred to me would be a life both barren and gray.

Admittedly some terrible actions have been taken in the name of avowedly sacred things. But terrible actions have been taken for all kinds of other reasons as well; the notion of “sacred” is not a uniquely awful source of bad behavior. And just because some people act badly in the name of something does not alter whatever is good in that something.

Perhaps there is a place that is particularly peaceful and meaningful – for me, its sitting at the edge of the sea, watching the waves tumble and lap the shore.  At times it’s curling up with a cup of coffee in a favourite chair reading a favourite author. Sacred to me has many diverse meanings and changes daily.

I’m sure each one of us has asked that question at some point in our lives, what is sacred?  to us?  What inspires awe or a feeling of protection, reverence?!  I’m sure the responses would be as diversified as the number of people on our planet.

Thank you for dropping by and reading.  Take care 🙂
