The irony of finding Roland’s “good luck hat” wasn’t lost on June. It started out as a joke but he kept it going anyway. Jackson had given it to him a long time ago presumably to keep him safe and perhaps it would if it led them to their location, kept the searchers on the right track and led them in the right direction.
Nigel was in constant contact with his men. So far, they hadn’t found any clues suggesting which cave the men had entered. It was frustrating to say the least.
June had a good handle on her emotions which had to be tumultuous, a roller coaster ride from elation to angst, yet she continued calm and alert. Outside trained professionals, it was rare. Too often friends or family lost their heads in these situations and was why they were usually kept out of the loop, at least on this side of things.
“I take it there’s no news?”
“Nothing so far, but we know we’re on the right track from the clues we’re finding.”
“It’s the only thing giving me hope at the moment,” she remarked on a sigh.
Stopping dead in her tracks she asked, “You don’t think the clues might be a distraction, do you?”
“I can’t say no unequivocally, but I believe we’re headed in the right direction.”
“I have to ask because it’s been bothering me ever since we saw that guy racing away from us. I couldn’t help but wonder if he was the one dropping the clues. That sneer and sly wording, I was covered in goosebumps and every time I think of him I feel the same way. So, what makes you so positive?” June asked concerned. Never one to beat around the bush, she would rather be prepared then blindsided.
“For one, the only logical hiding place out here would be the caves. It would provide them with the desired protection required for a long haul, they’d hear anyone coming, they can hold up there as long as supplies last, and they can keep an eye on our guys, there’s nowhere for them to go.”
“I know I’m second guessing the situation, but I can’t help myself. I keep going over the whole thing in my mind hoping we haven’t missed something. I know your trained and know what your doing and what’s more I have complete confidence in your abilities. It’s not that. I guess it’s because I’m new to this. I don’t know how to focus in on what’s important like you do.”
“We’ll find them, June, I promise.”
