I have a thought provoking question for you. What do you consider fundamental in life? Some would say a strong work ethic, others, personal growth, willingness to change, and still others, values and principles. Some would say finding your purpose or quality relationships.

Personally, I believe all the above are fundamental to a productive happy life, but I would add loyalty, love, affection and caring for others and their well being.

When we moved to the “big city” I wasn’t expecting to witness as much respect and consideration as I’ve seen. Ok, I’m disabled and it’s difficult to get around. Having said that, it touches my heart that there are others out there willing to help whether it’s holding a door open until I can get through, reaching for something I can’t quite reach, or simply stopping to converse with a total stranger.

I have noticed this willingness to assist has come from – others my age who are adept at getting around, and as an age group, I’d say 35 – 60. As we wandered the store looking for necessary items, I couldn’t reach an item and was struggling when a young man asked if he could help when he realized what I required, got it and handed it to me with a huge smile, for which I thanked him. It truly touched my heart.

Interestingly enough, a large group of individuals in the 18 – 25 group walk past without any interest and or almost a look of fear on their faces. It makes me wonder what they are thinking – could that be me in 40 or 50 years? Eyes quickly pop to the right as I pass and then quickly away.

Of course, the larger question is what do we expect on a fundamental level from society as a whole? With so much negativity in the press and on social media, it does have you questioning and doubting positivity. Remember the good old days when every newscast included one positive happy thought or deed carried out by an individual or group? I always looked forward to that segment and found it upbuilding and encouraging. Perhaps we could use more of that in society as a whole. One little act of kindness can carry a massive impact. Just a thought.

I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir here, because I’ve witnessed all manner of kind thoughts deeds wishes and hopes for others. That’s why I love this blogging community so much!

  1. Did you hear about the fatal stabbing (today?)? A boy was murdered as tens of his peers watched and filmed it on their phones instead of doing anything to help.

Stella's comment garnered a sideways glance from Darren who all but spit out his tongue. The look said, 'what the hell' since they'd agreed this wasn't the time to broach the subject. He dropped his head in resignation. That's Stella he thought. Always the unexpected.
