Higgins called Harmond back quickly relaying the names and addresses of others the perp may have found and asked him to send patrol cars to alert each of them and verify whether they’d noticed anyone acting suspiciously or taking undue interest in Annabel. “I want each officer to pay close attention to take note and get back to me the second he or she’s finished each interview.” The more knowledge and information he had, the better the odds of determining his next move and catching the miscreant.
“Maybe I should move into a hotel, make myself available. Then he’ll concentrate on me and leave everyone else alone.” Annabel’s concern was real, intense and palpable. “I don’t want my friends involved! There’s no telling what he might do…look what happened at Amber and Ted’s – and knew you were there, a cop! for god’s sake!”
“That’s a last-ditch effort, Annabel. You are much safer here where Loki and I can protect you. So far he’s operating on stupid dumb luck. It seems he’s using similar tactics to those used on our victim but it won’t help him any, the department is fully aware and knows to field any questions relating to the murder, me or you. It will remain that way until the case closes.”
“I simply don’t want my friends injured or at risk. It strikes me this lunatic is taking unnecessary foolhardy risks and making stupid mistakes.”
“We’re taking every precaution possible, Annabel.”
She tossed her hair back and remarked, “I don’t know how you have the patience to sit and wait…that’s definitely one of the difficult aspects for me. For one, I never expected anything to come of Jersey finding that poor unfortunate young woman and I certainly didn’t expect reprisals and threats. It blows my mind.” She placed her hands on either side of her head as if containing her thoughts or examining them to see if they were real.
“You don’t rub shoulders with the riff-raff of society, and why should you! Stands to reason everything that has happened is shocking.”
A lop-sided grin appeared before she stated, “I suppose you’ve seen it all and not much surprises you…”
“Sometimes it does. Man’s inhumanity to man knows no bounds and it’s astounding what they’ll come up with to hurt one another.”
